Welcome to Climate Change and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Climate change is a global issue that requires immediate solutions. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are key considerations when designing and executing mitigation plans. Complex multiscale issues like climate change require engaging people from all backgrounds and sectors of society in developing solutions. In addition, climate change must be approached as an issue of race. The negative effects of climate change are affecting countries with majority populations of color, especially black and brown people, although most of the planet’s CO2 emissions do not come from these countries. In addition, people of color are the majority of climate refugees—those forced to flee due to environmental alterations caused by climate change. Here, I would like to highlight the critical role of DEI in designing, planning, and executing climate change mitigation options.
